Our world as we knew it changed when our little prince was just 10 months old. On January 14, 2014, Matteo was diagnosed with an optic pathway glioma brain tumor. After many consultations with various doctors, we walked into the Stephen D. Hassenfeld center to have a last consultation with Dr. Jeffrey Allen and was immediately greeted by the warmest smile from the most sincere lady I've ever come across. She hugged my family and handed us a hand made blanket to keep Matteo warm in his stroller during the brutal winter we had. She offered us snacks, a tour and her compassion. We later found out from Dr. Allen that Maya is the founder of Making Headway Foundation. So...what that means to all of the families that spend much of their time there is Maya and her Angels know just how to turn frowns, upside down. They bring back the smiles with all of the fun entertainment and with yummy snacks to fill empty bellies, birthday parties lavish the children with gifts, arts and craft projects for every occasion, and simply just being there to hug! One thing I learned very early on in my relationship with Maya is that she never says no. Matteo loves to grab 10 strawberries, 5 cookies, a handful of crackers and 1,000 dishes and will eat only 1 strawberry and 1 cracker... But Maya NEVER says NO! Her famous words," oh, let him have it. It's okay!"
Matteo quickly became known around Hassenfeld for his smile and charm... All of the ladies love him! In fact, they fight over who he will go to next. And boy does he love that attention!!! After 2 1/2 months on weekly chemotherapy, this place was home away from home. We wish every day that we didn't have to ever go there, but since these were the cards that were dealt, there's no other hands we would want our love to be in.
So... I ask all of our family and friends to please help us give back to this life changing non- for profit organization. This is our way as a family to say thank you to ALL of the making headway Angels that have turned our frowns upside down. We can't imagine going through such heartache with all of the support MHF has given to us and to all of the other families we have met over the past year and a half.
We thank each and every one of you who have reached out, donated and supported us every step of this journey... It truly takes a village!!!
